Initial Ideas And Proposal

Initial Ideas and Proposal
Layout:

For my college magazine I would like my layout to be similar as the image below.  For my image I would like it to be mid shot of a college student in a happy atmosphere.  I would like my masthead to be simple but effective and I would like it to stand out so it can be seen from a distance to attract consumers.

Cover Lines

For my magazine I would like my cover lines to relate to my audience. From the image above, you can see the cover lines are to relate to teenagers lifestyles. I would like to approach the same aspect but instead of lifestyle problems (e.g. she’s 15 and pregnant) I would rather have a magazine to do with teenager’s hobbies and leisure’s, for instance music, as music is universal.  I would like my cover lines to be laid out in the same places as the image above.  For my puff/plugs I think an idea such as money off or coupons would attract student’s, as the majority of teenagers don’t have lots of money.

Masthead and Fonts

For my masthead I have chosen a few names for my magazine’s, which are:
·      College Express
·      College Life
·      Six Form
·      College Daily
I feel ‘College Express’ sounds effective as it sounds modern and fresh.  For the font of my masthead I would like it to be bold and in sans font.

·    COLLEGEexpress (Modern and effective)
·    COLLEGEexpress
·    COLLEGEexpress (modern and fresh)
·    COLLEGEexpress (too feminine and will not suit my male audience)
·    COLLEGEexpress too feminine and will not suit my male audience)
·    COLLEGEexpress (too bold and not clear)

I think the third font look the most effective and as a teenager myself, I feel the text is modern and almost digital which relates to teenagers generation upbringing as technology is a big part of most of their lives.

I did take a quick survey of the pupils in my class and asked them for there opinions on the fonts, in result the third font was the most popular and running up was the first font. Both of these fonts are modern and are almost digital, which relates to my audience.
Colour Scheme:

I think having general and simple colours such as the primary colours are effective and suit both genders so my magazine will have a broader audience. However simple colours matched with vibrant colours make the text standout. However I do not want my text to clash with my image.

Images:

For my images I would like mid shots of student/s around the college. Like the ‘College’ magazine above, I think having a student outside is effective as it makes the magazine almost look friendly and the colours of image attract me as a audience and having a similar image on my magazine will have the same effect on other people.

Audience:

I am generally aiming my magazine at college students around the age of 16-20. I have chosen this audience as its a college magazine so the majority of other audiences won't be interested. Also as a student of a college myself I can relate to my target audience and can offer certain aspects of my knowledge and experience of my college. I am aware that for my magazine I need to include the whole college for example I am taking media, so I can offer my knowledge  of that subject, however I am unaware of engineering so I would have to do research of y audience to offer a broader magazine.

Genre:

As my magazine is a college magazine,  my genre is broad, for example I will include sport and music as they are universal and the majority of teenagers enjoy these subjects.

Publishing:

Some magazine have seasonal selling times, What I mean by this is certain magazine will be released and sold around a season. A example of this is the fitness magazine 'Zest' and it is mainly advertised and put at the front of the shelf around summer time. With my genre of magazine it can be sold any time, however for example at exams time, I can have a special edition magazine focusing on exams. I would publish my magazine weekly as most magazines do, and I would like my magazine to update my audience with the latest news, so it has to be published weekly.

Dimensions:

Most magazines are around the a4 size, however I would like to offer my audience a compact size (a5), as it will be practical and wouldn't take much space in there bags. I would also offer a a4 size to follow the trend of most magazine.

5 teenage girl magazine covers

Conventions of teenage magazines'

 Conventions of teenage magazines’

Question: To what extent should magazines be held responsible for the social ramifications of the representations they offer?

The conventions of a girls teenage magazine is to represent the “perfect girl” which the target audience desire.  They attract there audience by having a large image on the front cover of the superficial thin model which is photo shopped and modified dramatically. This is a example of social ramification as teenage girls will be insipired by the model and will suffer to look like they do, for instance if the model is a size six, if the reader is inspired by the model , she will go on diets or do painful exercises to look they the aspirational model. Another example of social ramifications is the young girl may feel self conscious about her image once she see’s the “perfect girl”.

I chose bliss magazine as it is a perfect example of trying to sexualize young teenage girls who haven’t properly matured. On the front there is a mid shot body photo of Cher Lloyd pulling a pose. You can clearly see several tattoos on her arms. I am not declaring tattoos are unpleasant but I think that the young audience should not be exposed to “adult” beauty accessories as I believe children should remain innocent and pure for as long as possible and shouldn’t be exposed to adult accessories.  There is also other evidence of the magazine cover trying to sexualize young children as there is a pull out quote stating “Why I had a boob job at 16!!”, this instantly sends out a message to young teenagers saying that this action is almost acceptable, and in result making them want a boob job to improve there image when there older.

I have also chosen the teenage magazine ‘seventeen’, which is a popular in America. However this type of genre of magazine serves as a carrier for stereotypes, usually negative which often develop self –esteem problems, because the reader desires to look like the unrealistically portrayed models on the front cover.  Models in all the magazines I have chosen are mostly underweight and are often the cause of teenage girls becoming anorexic or bulimic which is obviously a serious and dangerous ramification.
As well as having a negative impact on teenage girls, it can also affect a teenage boys representation towards woman or even themselves. For example a teenage boy perception on the ‘average’ teenage girl is removed by the image of a perfect girl, which he has seen in the teenage magazine and it gets in the way of any realistic perception. Therefore the teenage girl feels to get the guy she must look like the models they see in the magazine. The social consequence in this case is once again sexulasing the young girls, as they long for a relationship otherwise they don’t feel as they fit in.

I have also done some background research,  in all the magazine I have chosen, an average of thirty six percent of the magazine is advertisement. The vast majortity of the magazines advertisement are involved with fashion and make up, where only few are dedicatied to serious problems like breast cancer awareness, and don’t talk to strangers ect.

So in conclusion I think typical teenage girl magazines are responsible for social ramification in todays society as the incourage and promote teenage girls to look like underweight models.

Media AS Home Work

For media we as a class were asked to research magazine front covers and analyse them. We had to analyse who was the target audience, how the cover has attempted to appeal to them and what conventions of the cover are evident.

I had chosen this magazine front cover as it is well known and respectable magazine, and has an iconic celebrity on the front which is one of the main conventions of a magazine, especially if the magazine genre is music or celebrity. I believe the target audience for this genre of magazine is 15-35 and musicians, as the celebrity on the front page is a part of our generations.  Q, the magazine is generally appeals to both genders, however with this particular image of Lady Gaga may appeal to the males more than female for obvious reasons.  It is clear that the magazine’s main story is of Lady Gaga from the picture, as well of the large sans reversed-out text of her name.  Another convention that may attract an audience is the feature boxes on the front page which have quotes from the magazine and other famous names such as ‘Jimi Hendrix’. With his name on the front cover this will instantly gain and attract their audience as Jimi Hendrix is a huge icon and inspiration to young musician’s etc. With his name in bold sans font it clearly stands out.

With almost three hundred music magazines in the United Kingdom alone, there is a huge competition , however Q clearly have a huge mass audience as they have such big celebrities on their cover, so people instantly want to consume the magazine has it has great expectations. So as you can see on the front of the magazine, the letter ‘Q’ instantly stands out, as it is the logo for the magazine.  Including it also has a headline on top of the magazine saying ‘THE UK’S BIGGEST MUSIC MAGAZINE’ which is a convention that attracts musicians and people who are interested in music.

It has another feature box in the front page with big bold sans font quoting ‘100 most SHOCKING MOMENTS in MUSIC’, as we as the viewer can see the words shocking is in capitals to create more of an effect on the font and to intrigue the audience to find out what is so shocking.  The front cover mainly consists of feature boxes to fill up the page to interest the reader and to attract an audience.

Another convention which we have seen is the feature box once again. We can see a well known name in it, and also a 5 star rating which attracts.

In conclusion the main conventions which have attracted the targeted audience of 15-35 and musician’s, is the logo, the main image of an icon and the many feature boxes of famous celebrities.

Magazine Termniology

Firstly we create our own folder and names it  "Media Magazine".
Using Adobe InDesign CS3 we created our first page and we expiermented with fonts, text size and text colours.

Then secondly we were given camera's and were told to take pictures and import them onto the computer. Once we did this we, i added one of my chosen images to mhy first page. At the start it was to big to fit on the page, so I created a box on the page and went to the settings fitting and selected fit into box. It automatically fitted it in the box with ease.
